"Writing Deep River with Karl Marlantes"- Karl Marlantes was born in Astoria and grew up in Seaside, where he graduated from Seaside High School in 1963. He attended Yale University on a National Merit Scholarship and was graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Economics. He attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, graduating with an M.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics in 1972.
He fought in the Vietnam War as a Marine infantry officer in 1968 and 1969. He is the author of Deep River, Matterhorn, Cold Victory, and What It Is Like to Go to War.
He and his wife, Anne, have five children and seven grandchildren and spend time between their homes in Cannon Beach and Woodinville, WA.
